Children's Home
Sunshine Children's Home is a 75-bed ICF/MR (intermediate care facility)
for children and adults with mental retardation who require a high level
of support services. The Children's Home is located on a 25 acre, partially
wooded campus on Maumee Western Road in Maumee, Ohio. Residents live in
homelike suites in groups of eight to 24.

Each suite has several
bedrooms, a living room and kitchenette. The Children's Home was remodeled
in 2001 with new carpeting, wall coverings, furniture and fixtures that
create a bright, inviting atmosphere. Facilities include an adaptive playground,
gym, therapeutic pool, sensory room, wheelchair accessible boardwalk,
animal activity area and spiritual life center.
Each resident has
an individualized, comprehensive teaching program to maximize his or her
physical, emotional, educational and spiritual growth. Our staff includes
nurses, direct care workers, speech pathologists, social workers, psychologists
and psychiatrists, behavior specialists, recreation/aquatics specialists,
physical and occupational therapists, a spiritual life coordinator and
a dietitian. The Sunshine medical director is always on call and several
medical specialists make regular visits.
Although the Children's
Home was founded to take care of infants and toddlers with mental retardation,
today most residents are in their late teens and early twenties. Sunshine
provides family support services to people
caring for children with disabilities at home.
Family
Care (Group) Homes
Sunshine operates 16 Family Care Homes in three counties in northwest
Ohio. These community-based homes house four to eight individuals in residential
neighborhoods throughout our area. Each home is staffed 24 hours-per-day
to provide the supervision and supports needed by residents. In general,
residents do not need the intensive level of medical support provided
in the Children's Home. However, they have a wide variety of physical,
medical and behavioral needs.

Staff and residents
work together to create a true sense of family amid the daily routine
of work, school, shopping, dining out or attending community events. These
activities help develop independence, self-care, daily living skills and
appropriate social behavior. Family members are encouraged to visit and
some residents spend weekends or holidays with their families.
Supported
Living
Sunshine
serves more than 100 individuals with developmental disabilities in Lucas,
Fulton and Wood counties who are living independently in their own homes or
apartments. Our staff provides a variety of services based on the individual's
needs ranging from 24-hour supervision to assistance with grocery shopping
and bill paying. These supports allow clients to be a part of the community,
hold jobs and reach their full potential.
